Drug Courts are a treatment alternative to incarceration for offenders before the juvenile or circuit courts on criminal charges. Drug courts recognize that incarceration, in and of itself, does little to break the cycle of illegal drug use, associated crime, and family dysfunction. Chesterfield County/Colonial Heights operate an adult and juvenile drug court. These drug courts provide community support treatment services to non-violent, but high-risk substance abusers.
The Drug Court Foundation was established in 2002 to support the creation and sustainability of drug courts in Chesterfield County and the City of Colonial Heights. The Foundation is a non-profit organization operated by a Board of Directors.
The Foundation's mission is to reduce substance abuse and crime through a comprehensive process of interventions leading to healthy, substance-free lifestyles. To this end, the Foundation has established the following goals:
1. To promote awareness regarding effective interventions within the criminal justice system.
2. To reduce substance abuse and related criminality among non-violent substance abusers and support the development of healthy family systems among drug court clients.
3. To ensure adequate resources for the drug court programs to meet their mission.
